The Theory Test was introduced in July 1996 for all Car Drivers and Motorcyclists. The test is designed to improve the safety of newly qualified drivers by developing the right attitudes needed to drive safely.

All new drivers must pass the Theory Test before taking a driving test.

To pass the test successfully candidates must answer 30 out of 35 multiple choice questions correctly followed by 14 video clips featuring various types of hazords. Candidates are required to idetify each hazord that may result in the driver needing to take action, the earlier the hazard is spotted, and a response made, the higher the score. The pass mark for this section of the test is 44 out of 75.
